Waiting on Wednesday (24)

Goodreads Summary:

Meant to be or not meant to be . . . that is the question.

It's one thing to fall head over heels into a puddle of hazelnut coffee, and quite another to fall for the—gasp—wrong guy. Straight-A junior Julia may be accident prone, but she's queen of following rules and being prepared. That's why she keeps a pencil sharpener in her purse and a pocket Shakespeare in her, well, pocket. And that's also why she's chosen Mark Bixford, her childhood crush, as her MTB ("meant to be").

But this spring break, Julia's rules are about to get defenestrated (SAT word: to be thrown from a window) when she's partnered with her personal nemesis, class-clown Jason, on a school trip to London. After one wild party, Julia starts receiving romantic texts . . . from an unknown number! Jason promises to help discover the identity of her mysterious new suitor if she agrees to break a few rules along the way. And thus begins a wild goose chase through London, leading Julia closer and closer to the biggest surprise of all: true love.

Because sometimes the things you least expect are the most meant to be.

Book Review: Between the Pages by: Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer

Goodreads Summary:

What happens when happily ever after…isn’t?

Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.

And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.

Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale.

My Review:

ReadingNook Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

I've always loved reading Jodi Picoult books, I've only read 3-4 of her adult novels but all of them captivated me in a way thats hard to compare too. Her books always tug at your heartstrings, make you question your feelings regarding certain issues, and really make you think, which good novels should make you do (in my opinon). When I heard she was coming out with her first YA novel paired with her daughter I knew right away I wanted to read it.

This book is unlike any of her other novels, in fact I honestly couldn't tell from the writing style that it was even Jodi Picoult, and if I didn't know who wrote the book, I never in a million years would have guessed that she was the author. That being said, the writing was PHENOMENAL, just not typical Picoult that's all. This was a modern day fairy tale. It flipped between the fairy tale, a character in the fairy tale; Oliver, and The girl reading the book; Delilah. I liked how it flipped between the three different perspectives, and the illustrations in the book (althought I read the ARC and the artwork was not final) was stunning. I loved the illustrations that clung to the words in the beginning of the book, I felt it added to the book in a way that was unique and fun.

This book was magical, fun, and I think any book lover will truly enjoy the concept of this book, we all know we've "fallen" for a fictional character before and maybe not to this extreme but its fun to imagine the possibilites of having a magical book that truly comes to life when you open the pages. I truly hope that Jodi Picoult partners on more YA books with her daughter because it certainly was a magical duo.

Audiobook Review: Between You and Me

Goodreads Summary:

From the authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Nanny Diaries comes a new novel that takes readers behind the scenes of stratospheric celebrity—what it means to be worshipped by millions and still feel loved by none.

Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus have proven again and again that they are masters at exploring the nuances of family relationships—as they intersect with the current trends in the culture at large.

In Between You and Me, twenty-seven-year-old Logan Wade has built a life for herself in New York City, far from her unhappy childhood in Oklahoma. But when she gets the call that her famous cousin needs a new assistant, it’s an offer she can’t refuse. Logan hasn’t seen Kelsey since they were separated as kids; in the meantime, Kelsey Wade has become one ofFortune Magazine’s most powerful celebrities and carrion for the paparazzi. But the joy at their reunion is overshadowed by the toxic dynamic between Kelsey and her controlling parents. As Kelsey grasps desperately at a “real” life, Logan risks everything to try and give her cousin the one thing she has never known—happiness. As Kelsey unravels in the most horribly public way Logan finds that she will ultimately have to choose between saving her cousin and saving herself.

Audiobook Review:

I've just recently started getting into listening to audiobooks, now that I have a longer commute to work I have more time to be able to listen to them and this is only the third one i've listened too, but I really enjoyed it. The narrators voice was easy to listen too and easy to follow. If I don't like a narrators voice I sometimes feel it's that much harder to get into a story, but that wasn't the case with this audiobook at all.

Between You and Me was really good, and if one things for sure It made me never want to be famous (or in least not in the spotlight). Kelsey is a pop star, her cousin Logan is just an average girl, but devastating events tore them apart when they were younger, and only years later after a surprise phone call to Logan, from Kelsey's assitant Deliah, do they start to reconnect. Circumstances lead to Logan becoming Kelsey's new assistant and is taken on the ride of her life through the ups and downs of fame, fortune, and the perils of paparazzi.

This book sparked a lot of different emotions in me. At times I was laughing out loud, other times my jaw was hanging wide open in shock, other times i had tears in me eyes. Emotionally it had its highs and lows, but overall I really enjoyed the story. I liked the characters and although Kelsey wasn't super-relatable as far as her career goes, I felt personality wise she was easy to connect too, she wasn't a whiney, concieted, spoiled brat of a celebrity, but a normal girl wanting to find love and start a family of her own. If you like audiobooks or want to give them a try, I would definitly suggest this one to you guys, it's a fun, sometimes sad, othertimes down-right hilarious adventure of a book.

Goddess Fish Blog Tour: One Wet Summer by: Ann Montclair

One Wet Summer
by Ann Montclair
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Maura Fields loves her uncomplicated, independent, single life, but things quickly change when a summer vacation opens the door to an unexpected world of passion and desire. Wealthy Savannah hotelier Ben Driscoll had his playboy lifestyle upended when his ex-wife died, entrusting him to care for their daughter—a child he sequesters and vows to protect from future heartache and disappointment. Can the wall Ben has built around his heart withstand the assault from the intriguing, beguiling Maura, or will it crumble, leaving him vulnerable to the undeniable attraction and unbridled need to make her his own?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:
Maura had nothing to lose and everything to gain. Why not? What was she here for? Fun. And escape from the responsibilities of catering to children. This man looked like more fun than she had ever had, and Savannah was certainly an escape from the confines of her seventh grade classroom at Atlanta Mills Middle School. Ms. Fields was just Maura today, and damn, it felt good.
“My name is Maura Fields,” she said, and she giggled as his lips pursed—as if he were tasting her name and found he liked its flavor. “Maura Fields: single woman, no complications. Are you married, encumbered in any way? I hate to be so blunt, Ben, but I am a woman alone on vacation, and I don’t want to find myself taken advantage of, even by someone as beguiling as you.”
He looked taken aback as his blue eyes rounded and one eyebrow arched. “Ms. Fields, I am not married. Does that make you feel more at ease with my invitation?”
“Why, yes, it does!” she couldn’t help but exclaim.
“So, I will see you at four, ready to swim?” he inquired again, but this time it sounded like a statement, a predetermined actuality. Maura liked an assertive man, especially one so dapper. She nodded her head affirmatively, not trusting herself to make a dignified sound.
Ben bowed slightly and slowly raked his brilliant eyes over her body, toe to top. With an appreciative smile playing about his sexy mouth, he said, “Maura, you’re the best thing that has happened around this old place in a very long time.”

AUTHOR Bio and Links:
I was born in Los Angeles, California, where my parents and grown daughter now reside. I currently live in the Finger Lakes region of New York with my sexy hero, our handsome son, and a pile of lazy dogs and ferocious cats. I enjoy a plethora of hobbies including but not limited to attending concerts, hiking and cycling, cooking, and gardening. I love to dance, to dress up, and I'll go just about anywhere a good time can be had.
I've built a satisfying career as an English professor at a small, rural community college, and now I'm also writing and publishing romance. I've finished and sold a few contemporary titles, and I'm working on perfecting a Tudor historical, and penning a modern day romantic suspense.
I plan to spend the rest of my life reading and writing in my little cabin in the woods.
My biggest wish is that each of my readers will be inspired to believe in and find their own happily-ever-after.

Q&A with The Author:

-If you weren't writing, what career do you think you would choose? I have my chosen career.  I’ve been a college English professor for eighteen years, teaching creative writing, literature, and composition and rhetoric.  I’m on academic sabbatical this year, and I’ll admit, I love getting paid to stay home and read and write romance!  But I do miss my students.  Their youth, vitality, and energy inspires me daily. When I return to teaching in the fall, I’ll still have almost a month off every Christmas and all teachers enjoy their summers(like Maura in One Wet Summer).
- Your book One Wet Summer is a contemporary romance, are those the books you enjoy reading as well, or just writing? I enjoy reading everything, but romance is my favorite genre.  Contemporary is my preference, then historical, which I also write.
- How do you come up with characters names, do they just come to you as your writing, or do u have some sort of system to picking them? I make lists of names, and when I come up with two I like, I ask my son. I describe the character, and then he chooses between the two names.  It works well.  Twelve year olds are very organic and insightful!
- If you were deserted on an island and could only bring three books along what would they be and why? I’d bring the complete works of William Shakespeare, the Bible, and the complete works of Emily Dickinson.  Drama, drama, and more drama—in verse.

Heartfelt Blog Tour & Character Interview: The Delphi Bloodline by: Donna Del Oro

Book Summary:
Present day descendants of the ancient, psychically powerful Delphi bloodline face the threat of extinction when an evil tycoon hunts them for his own nefarious intent, a global spy network.
When artist Athena Butler, the modern-day descendant of a powerful, ancient bloodline of psychic women, realizes she’s the target of mysterious and dangerous kidnappers, she gets help from strange sources—the spirit of an ancient ancestor and a handsome man who claims to be one of her bloodline’s Guardians. Her mental powers and his brawny skills keep them one step ahead of the mastermind behind these kidnappers. Until the time when an FBI task force decides to use Athena as bait.

Excerpt:
Chapter One
Pyramid Valley, Nevada
Thursday AM
Athena Butler’s eyes blinked open and she sat up.
Coming back from The Flow was always jolting. Emerging from the stream of spirits was like a water skier lurching out of the water, pulled by a strong, invisible force. The mind caught up later to the body as if it required a rough snap to break free.
Likewise, to go there was like jumping out of a plane and feeling the air rush to your face, your limbs weightless and wobbly. Most of the time, it was a joy to enter this world of unseen spirits. Athena welcomed her visits, especially at night when she found herself invariably alone.
When she was a child, she’d often emerge from The Flow with a fearful whimper and a cry. She’d wept and wanted to stay in The Flow. Now, at twenty-six, Athena had grown accustomed to her mental flights. They were no longer fear-inducing for she understood their purpose. But her exits were still mind-wrenching and she often lay in bed afterwards, disoriented.
This morning, fear clutched her heart and she could barely breathe. With a trembling hand, she reached for her phone.
Breathless, she raked her other hand through her hair and kicked her legs over the side of the bed.  Six AM, Nevada time. She punched her mother’s mobile numbers. It was nine o’clock in D.C.
“Thank God, Mama! Where are you?”
“I’m in Baltimore, near the—.”
“Mama, I had a dream about you. A Flow Dream. The spirits—they want me to warn you! Whatever you’re doing right now, get off the streets.  Go home and lock the door. Call the police!”
Her heart felt like a ticking bomb in her chest.  Athena could barely speak. But her mother knew her and understood her Flow dreams. They were seldom wrong though sometimes a little off in timing. Today, a threat was imminent. She knew it.
“Slow down, Thena. Take a deep breath and tell me slowly about your dream. I don’t doubt you but we must be able to interpret it correctly. You know how these Flow Dreams are. Sometimes the symbolism is strange and difficult to interpret.”
“Okay—just go home and lock the door. Now, Mama!”

Athena had to swallow hard and take big gulps of air in order to speak. Losing her mother was unthinkable. She’d already lost her father, and in a way, her brother.
“Where are you, Mama?”
She inhaled and counted to five. Her mother wasn’t in Georgetown, where she lived with her second husband. Athena sensed water nearby, a large body of water. Her mind jumped ahead. The body of water in her terrifying dream was vast, a bay leading to the ocean. The Baltimore harbor—of course!
“Near downtown Baltimore. I’m heading toward a section of the city where I believe a little girl’s body was hidden. The police need the evidence from that location.  They think she was hidden somewhere, killed and then a day or two later dumped into the bay. I think I’ve found the monster’s hideout.”
“Mama—”
“I had a session with the homicide detective last night. I handled a few articles of the poor child’s clothing, what she was wearing when they found her. I got some visions so I drove up here to pinpoint the location. It’s not in a very nice part of town but I thought I’d drive around, and then call Detective Bonner when I got something.”
Athena groaned. Her mother was at it again.  Getting involved with homicide cases and trying to use her powers to bring killers to justice.
“Mama, get out of there, please! Go home—”
“I’ve had no sense of this danger, Athena, not to me personally,” her mother said. “Listen, we must talk soon. There are other dangers that I’ve seen…but don’t fret, my car doors are locked, I’m driving my big SUV. I’m in traffic, so relax.”
“Maybe you’re too focused on that homicide case,” Athena stressed. Her mother had no idea the danger she was putting herself in. First-hand experience had taught Athena that working with the cops was a dangerous business. Let them do their work and solve their own cases.
I’m done with all that.
Her mind darted back to the vision in her dream. She took a deep breath and steadied her voice.
“I saw you in your car, Mama. You stopped to get out. A black car pulled in front of you and another one—a long white one—blocked you in back. There was a woman driving the car in front and she was with men who had guns.  Someone grabbed you and carried you to the white car. I could smell salt water and then they took you away. Some place far away. And then I was in the mountains, the Sierras, searching for you.”
Athena bent over, clutching the cell phone, her lifeline to the one person she loved most in the world.  Her stomach cramped into a hard ball.
There was silence. “Mama, go home,” she repeated.
“Okay, Thena, I’m turning back toward the freeway. The harbor shops are on my left. Remember that eight-sided tower, the one with a great view of the harbor and breakwater. The octogon tower. You remember going there on your last visit here, don’t you?”
More silence followed then as an image sprang to Athena’s mind. Yes, they’d had lunch there…
Her mother gasped loudly.  A screech of brakes, metal crunching, glass breaking. Her mother cursing a blue streak in her native Italian.
“What happened, Mama? Are you all right?”
“Yes, dear. Just a stupid fender bender. Merda! Daniel’s going to throw a fit. My second one this year! I’m getting so distracted with these cases—not paying attention to what I’m doing. I swear this car pulled right in front of me, cut me off. It’s not my fault this time.”
More angry muttering followed.
“Dio, I really smashed up that rear end! Thena, I’ll call you right back as soon as I exchange insurance information with the driver. Be right back, Thena.”
“Mama, don’t get out of the—”
The line went dead.  With a cry, Athena sank to her knees on the cold, tile floor. Shivers of dread rippled through her. Her mind went numb with panic.
For God’s sake…Think! Get help!

Character Interview with Annabelle:

Behind THE DELPHI BLOODLINE by Donna Del Oro”:  Interview of  Annabella, the Matriarch of the Bloodline

THE DELPHI BLOODLINE: A smart, romantic thriller about an ancient bloodline of psychic women, the ruthless tycoon who wants to enslave them, the mysterious man who wants to protect them, and the modern-day descendant who must fight to stay alive and free!
Interviewer: Annabella, you speak several languages and have lived in a variety of places. What’s your background?
Annabella: I’m Italian by birth, once married to a Brit, now an American. I grew up speaking Italian, French, German and later learned English. And I have dual citizenship in Great Britain and Italy. My mother is Italian-Swiss, as her mother before her. We are all heirs of the Delphi Bloodline. My daughter, Athena, and son were born in England but now live in San Francisco.
Interviewer: Because of your close friendship with Bishop Bulgari, you have contacts with the Vatican. Can you comment about that unusual relationship?
Annabella: Bishop Bulgari believes, as I do, that our bloodline’s gift is from God. The Holy Father has occasionally asked me to read for him, and so I consult with the Vatican now and then. The Vatican Security Police ask me to inform them if there are any dangers that I can foresee in the Pope’s travel plans.  At one point in the story, I advise him to change his plans to go to Beirut.
Interviewer: Let’s talk about your beautiful daughter, Athena. She’s the modern-day descendant of the Bloodline. What have you taught her, growing up with the same psychic gifts that you have?
Annabella: I have taught her to use our connected telepathy for our “Night Visits”. When we’re on different continents, we can stay in touch with these telepathic visits. I’ve also taught her to keep a CLEAR MIND, STRONG HEART and a TOUGH SKIN. Inheriting the Bloodline’s gifts is a daunting responsibility and comes with a certain amount of danger. There are always people or organizations that want to stop us from using these gifts.
Interviewer: What other ways have you used your gifts?
Annabella: I have consulted with various police departments in trying to locate missing and abducted children. The Baltimore PD has asked me for their help in stopping a serial killer of children, and while doing this,  a group that means me harm tried to abduct me. That’s why Athena and I try to keep a very low profile.
Interviewer: Does this always work for you?  Keeping a low profile?
Annabella: No. At a White House dinner party, I made the mistake of allowing my American husband to talk about my Bloodline and me. Our unusual psychic gifts. That’s when the latest problems started.
Interviewer: I’m sorry for that. Thank you for your time and good luck!

Heartfelt Blog Tours: Guest Post with Libby Mercer

Blurb
Faced with a man so smooth he can charm the clouds from the sky, will Caitlyn be able to stick to her strict No Players policy?
Dedicated American fashion girl, Caitlyn Taylor, can’t stand players, and has successfully dodged them like enemy fire all her life. And then she meets fun-loving British CEO, John Harrington. Not only is he her boss’s brother, he’s the charismatic kind of womanizer that nightmares are made of. Worse still: he’s exactly Caitlyn’s type. As if his being the Superman of sex appeal isn’t enough, he’s also got that quirky something-something that she adores. Not that she’s even considering falling prey to his methods. No way.
John can’t fathom how Caitlyn can be impervious to his charms, given the extraordinary chemistry between them.  The more she resists, the more determined he is to break down the walls she’s built up to keep him out.  Forced to get creative, he orchestrates a “surprise” weekend in Paris for the two of them.  Game on!
Excerpt for Libby Mercer’s Fashioning a Romance
About twenty minutes later, she was interrupted by the sound of a melodious, male voice. “Methinks it is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts and accomplishments love to sew; especially as they are never more at home with their own hearts than while so occupied. Nathaniel Hawthorne.”
John was standing in the doorway with an irresistible grin and two steaming cups on saucers. “Tea break, Caitlyn?”
No. No, no, no, no, no.
But he was her boss’s brother. What choice did she have?
“Um… okay.” She set the dress aside while John crossed the room and placed the tray on the side table before taking a seat next to her on the sofa. She got a whiff of yummy soapy cleanness from him, and felt the blood forcing its way to the surface of her skin. He was sitting close – too close. His long, lean, muscular thigh was just inches away from hers. And she would almost swear that she could feel the heat radiating from him. Man, talk about a hot guy.
“Milk and one sugar, right?” He handed her one of the cups.
“Yes, thank you.” He’d obviously done his research. Yep, total player. No doubt about it. Caitlyn took a sip and counted to five before glancing up at John, who was beaming his million-watt smile down on her. The silence was too much to handle. “So…” She searched her brain for something to say. “What’s up with the quote? Are you like a Hawthorne expert or something?”

Guest Post with Libby Mercer:
On Fashion and Fabrics
By Libby Mercer
From a petal-soft silk tweed to a dotted Swiss cotton, I have always found fabrics to be enchanting. As a former fashion journalist, boutique owner and (briefly) as a fashion designer, I’ve spent my fair share of time meandering through the fabric wholesale shops lurking above the storefronts in New York’s Garment District. I loved taking in the displays of silks, cottons, leathers, wools and even PVCs and poly-blends in every color of the rainbow and then some. I could (although sadly, I never did) spend hours just running my fingers over the unique textures and delighting over the gorgeous prints.
Let’s just say I have a “thing” for fabrics.
And so when I started writing Fashioning a Romance, and I needed to decide what my heroine, Caitlyn, does for a living, fashion designer seemed like the logical choice. The story opens with a fashion emergency. Caitlyn’s employer, London semi-socialite, Sophie, needs a complicated cocktail dress constructed for the next evening. Caitlyn, fashion rock star that she is, sews her ass off and presents Sophie with the dress right on time. I had a grand old time writing the descriptions of the “twisty, strappy dress” made with iridescent lilac silk chiffon and plum velvet.
Although her designs are obviously amazing and gorgeous, Caitlyn’s personal style is very low key. I know a lot of people probably assume that clothing designers are walking fashion plates themselves, but in my experience, this is rarely the case. They work so hard, and they usually opt for comfortable, functional attire. Caitlyn is no exception. She spends the majority of the novel in her standard uniform: jeans, tee shirt and no shoes.
Whether or not it’s a conscious decision, we make “fashion statements” every single day by what we choose to clothe our bodies in. I really enjoyed drawing the essence of my characters out by describing their wardrobes, and there’s one scene in particular when I spotlight the difference between Sophie and Caitlyn’s styles – and their characters.
In this scene, Caitlyn is going through Sophie’s wardrobe, packing up some things for an impromptu trip to Paris, and she chooses four of Sophie’s dresses: “a long, slinky midnight blue number, a floaty petal pink knee-length one with princess seams, a stiff cotton floral print sundress with a structured bodice, and of course the quintessential little black dress” along with “silver strappy heels and black strappy heels” and “a cute little silk top and a pair of black linen cigarette pants.” When Caitlyn races into her bedroom to pack for herself, she selects “three plain cotton tops, three pairs of underwear, three pairs of socks, the oversized tee she slept in, her baggy pajama bottoms, her comfy black cardi and an extra pair of jeans.”
Despite her preference for the basics on a day-to-day basis, Caitlyn does cherish getting dolled up occasionally. In a scene further into the story, I have her shopping for a date dress and falling head over heels when she spots The Dress. Made with mossy green sand-brushed silk (an amazing textile with a suede-like texture) The Dress is perfect for her hourglass figure. I loved writing this scene. Caitlyn is a hardworking woman who rarely indulges herself, so it was an absolute joy for me to give her the unique sensation of pleasure that comes when you’re staring at your reflection and you know you look fabulous.
Thanks for reading!
Libby

My Review:

ReadingNook Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Jaime and Danny are both in their early thirties and both haven't been very lucky in love. Danny is a serial dater and loves that he can play games with woman without any real commitment, and Jaime can't find a guy she actually wants to settle down with. Things take a serious turn though when their mother Frankie wins the lottery and her only wish is that they produce a grandchild for her. The catch is though that they have a year to fufill her wish and she will give them eight million dollars as a reward, but is the jackpot worth all the drama, heartache, and disaster that ensues?

This was such a unique concept for a book, and as soon as I read the synopsis I knew I was going to really enjoy it. It was everything I had hoped it would be. The characters were outstanding, witty, and funny. The plot moved along in a way that made the book hard to put down, and It was light-hearted and contagious just the way a chick-lit book should be.

Jackie Pilossoph is what a good chick-lit writer is all about, she hit the story on the head with this one, and I loved the story from start to finish. The love interests were predictable but at the same time took turns that even the most observant couldn't anticipate, which I loved. I feel like some stories you can see what's going to happen from reading the first line and theres no surprises, but that was not the case with this book. Although some of the plot could have been a bit predictable, how they got there was what was unique and unpredictable. If you enjoy reading chick-lit I suggest you pick this one, because it was unlike any other story i've read in this genre.
